Counseling FAQs

What is the difference between counseling and therapy?

Counseling and therapy, when used to describe mental health services, mean the same thing.

What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?

A therapist provides talk or play therapy but does not prescribe medication. They may have a master’s degree or a PhD. A Psychiatrist is a mental health doctor. They have a medical degree, can formally diagnose, and can prescribe medication.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Lena Pope providers are therapists and cannot prescribe medication.

Do therapists do diagnostic testing?

No. Diagnostic testing can be done by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

No. PCP referrals are not currently required for outpatient mental health counseling.

Do therapists make custody recommendations?

Even under subpoena, therapists cannot and will not provide any recommendation regarding custody of a child.
